Thinking 'outside the square’ or 'outside the box’, implies that boundaries are constricting. Alternatively if we consider being ‘inside the box’ is like having a frame for our values and assumptions, it can be very useful because we don’t waste time re-inventing the wheel. There are times however, when we need to deliberately break out.

People get nervous about this. This produces a dilemma: a need for new thinking but a belief that you have to be within the box to have useful solutions. Edward de Bono says
the answer is simple, “the outsider works with an insider as a team.”

As a not-for-profit Institute for new thinking we contribute to the growth of a sustainable future for all West Australians by teaming up with organisations, communities and individuals, to help them deliberately design better futures.
